How to install Social Connect

Just like most Elgg plugins, all you have to do really is unzip the release archive into the mod folder of your Elgg installation. To be a little bit more precise, here is a step-by-step guide to get up and running with the Social Connect plugin

  1. Grab the latest copy of the plugin from the Downloads page
  2. Unzip the file inside the mod folder of your Elgg installation, making sure that the plugin ends up in the mod/social_connect folder
  3. Log into Elgg as an administrator, go to the Administration area and click on the Plugins menu item
  4. Activate the Social Connect plugin

Once you have run through this steps, the plugin is almost ready to use. Unfortunately, the biggest chunk of work is setting up the providers and creating the API keys in their own developer's areas. This cannot be automatized or managed from the plugin at the moment, so in order to get the public and secret keys required in the plugin settings, you will need to register and configure applications in each of the social networks you would like to enable. More information on how to do this is available from within the settings page itself or in the HybridAuth documentation. When you have completed registration with the providers of your choice, you can finally move on to the last step

  5. Open the Social Connect settings page and configure it to your liking

Input the public and secret key information you gathered in the previous step where required and enable the providers you want to offer on your website

Your Elgg instance should now allow users to login and register as usual, or to connect to your website using the external social networks that you have configured.
